HempBedz is made from natural hemp shiv, the woody core of the hemp plant. When separated from the external fibre hemp shiv gives a highly absorbent bedding. HempBedz is an ideal replacement for straw, paper or shavings for all pets, horses, and poultry. HempBedz is suitable for deep litter beds and for use in stables with rubber mats.
- Highly absorbent
- Dust extracted
- Easy to handle
- Environmentally friendly
- Odour reducing
HempBedz is capable of absorbing more liquid than wood shavings or straw, making the bed stay drier for longer.
Because HempBedz is dust-extracted it is kind to your animal’s respiratory system. HempBedz is not acidic so less likely to irritate your pet’s eyes, as shavings and other bedding materials can. In addition, animal odours will be reduced as HempBedz absorbs ammonia and other animal smells.
How to use HempBedz for Horses
If starting with a clean stable you will need 6-8 bales of HemBedz for a 12′ x 12′ stable.
If starting from an existing bed do not clean out all your previous bedding (as this is a waste) but use fresh HemBedz round the outside of your stable. As your old bedding becomes soiled remove in the normal way.
Once all old bedding is used, continue as above – you will then notice how much longer HempBedz lasts! From this point disturb the bed as little as possible, remove droppings daily and wet patches every three to five days. Top up with fresh HempBedz as required.
The average requirement for one horse is half to one bale per week.
Thought I’d send you this funny photo of our Shetland pony, Rosie. She had a little sedation when having her teeth cleaned and we used a bag of bedding to hold her head up.
“Just to let you know order came early on Wednesday so that was good and I’ve just changed the first of 3 stables from shavings today…..I can’t believe how much better the hemp is, no dust, smells great and easy to move around, just annoyed I didn’t change sooner lol! I have a Connemara pony who has had laminitis in the past and his feet get sore, the hemp is much better underfoot! I used 7 bales for a large stable, will defo be buying more, thanks!”
“A family run business who have been amazing to do business with, loads of advice, easy ordering, extremely quick delivery with each order and an outstanding bedding product. Highly recommended indeed.”
“Nick at HempBedz was brilliant to deal with and answered all my questions. I ordered my pallet on the Friday and Wednesday afternoon it was with me! 2 bales down in the stable; no dust, soft, smells nice and hasn’t moved about.”
“The horses are loving their Hempbedz. I’ve never seen the horses lying down so much and all at the time since we changed to your hemp bedding proving it must be very comfortable for them. Also would like to say the muck cart only needs emptying once a week now since we changed to hemp. A great product to put on the floor of the horsebox for travelling we get two or three trips out of it before having to put new in. Great stuff to work with”

Natural Horse Bedding
100% natural, low dust, super absorbent, bio-degradable
How much bedding for your horse?
100 square feet (10 m2) will require 6 bags of premium horse bedding to start.
Add 1 bag every 7-10 days to replace what’s been mucked-out of the stall.
Replace all bedding every 10-12 weeks (see below for instructions).
”I am totally astonished to learn that something as well known as hemp bedding all over Europe seems to be unknown in the United States or other western countries. Hemp is the #1 choice for dust allergic horses in Germany. The advantages are:
– it is absolutely dust free
– it is very soft
– it is not eaten by the horses
– only small amounts needed (1 bale of 15 kg/week/box)
– it minimizes your daily mucking out (only removing of dung daily, wet patches once a week, complete box every three months)
– all urine goes straight to bottom and the surface stays clean and dry
– the soaking capacity is much higher than with straw (straw = 100 %, wood choppings 200-300%, hemp 400-500% !)
– it keeps the smell of used bedding under the dry surface (unlike used straw)
– it reduces the volume of your muck heap enormously
– it rottens much faster than straw and can be used as fertilizer after short time period
– and : it’s affordable!
You see, I am absolutely convinced of hemp bedding. My Paint Horse mare is highly allergic to dust and starts coughing when she is in contact with dry straw or hay. Hay can be watered before feeding but I had to find an alternative for the bedding, as wood choppings are also too dusty despite the producers claim it to be “dustfree”. So I ended up with Hemp bedding. Since I have been using that for her bedding she never coughs and her breathing capacity improved” ……says Christina from Germany
