Charlotte’s Web Maker Targets Broader Market with CBD from Domestic Hemp
Until Sanjay Gupta told the story of Charlotte Figi in 2013, few were familiar with cannabidiol (CBD). For those not familiar, Figi, now 9, was suffering from hundreds of seizures each day. Her parents turned to the Stanley brothers, who had developed proprietary hemp genetics and had created a high-CBD extract from what is now known as Charlotte’s Web. It was her remarkable improvement that served as a catalyst for Gupta’s famous reversal of his opinion regarding the potential medicinal benefits of cannabis.
After being catapulted into global fame, the company, then known as CW Botanicals, began to ship product commercially in 2014. The Stanley brothers are now targeting a much broader market, the health and wellness market, and have rebranded as CW Hemp. The company’s offerings include three product lines based on concentration, each offering two sizes and the option of either mint chocolate or olive oil flavor.
CW Hemp stands out from its competitors in many ways, first and foremost in that it grows its own industrial hemp in Colorado (150K plants on 65 acres) while rivals import industrial hemp paste to make their products. Additionally, CW Hemp uses the aerial parts of the plant while competitors by law (though not practice, perhaps) are restricted to using the stalk, the consequence of which is requiring significantly more plant material, a process that can lead to the amplification of potential contaminants. The company claims that the 2014 Farm Bill opened the door for it to ship its domestically grown product to all 50 states.
Shay Castle profiled the company, which operates out of an 18K sq. ft. facility in Boulder, from where it ships out more than $1mm of products each month. CW Hemp has brought in Vijay Bachus, a seasoned organic and health and wellness brand veteran, as Director of Operations, and he intends to lead them into broader retail distribution and geographical expansion.Charlotte’s Web Maker Targets Broader… Charlotte’s Web Maker Targets Broader Market with CBD from Domestic Hemp Until Sanjay Gupta told the story of Charlotte Figi in 2013, few were familiar
Where Can You Buy CBD Oil and What Should You Look For? A CBD Shopping Guide
CBD oil from hemp extract continues to dominate health and wellness news. This health supplement is getting attention for a variety of reasons, namely because many people are seeing positive effects, and these are not special cases. Decades of research show phytocannabinoids to be potent aides in supporting overall wellbeing in human bodies. But, while many companies claim to have harnessed the amazing benefits of the hemp plant, there can be huge differences in both quality and purity that depend on many different factors.

Where Can You Buy CBD?

What to look for when choosing a CBD oil or tincture
The first step in identifying the right CBD hemp extracts is to find the best in terms of the quality and consistency of the product. Clearly, not all hemp extract products are created equal. Knowing what to look for when purchasing CBD products is critical. Keep reading to find out what you should look for when buying CBD:
Where Was the Hemp Grown?
Hemp is a powerful and very special crop, and one of its powers is the ability to clean soil by pulling toxins and other contaminates up through its roots via a process called phytoremediation (more on that here). Therefore it’s imperative that hemp products be sourced from the best raw ingredients, starting with soil that’s clean and has been tested by companies with the highest quality standards. That applies to every single stage from growing to extraction to production!
When looking through all the options, use this following checklist to find the best product you can trust from a company with high standards for its CBD oil hemp extract production:
- Confirm that the CBD brand grows its own hemp and extracts the oils themselves, or if they just put their label on outsourced hemp extracts.
- To that end, if they don’t do their own extracting, find out who they are having to do it and what solvents they are using for extracting.
- Make sure the hemp comes from American farms.
- Ask if the manufacturer controls the production process from seed to shelf.
- Review the Certificate of Analysis especially if the hemp is grown in non-US countries, to make sure there aren’t harmful amounts of contaminants, toxins, heavy metals, etc.
- Find out if the CBD company is U.S. Hemp Authority™ Certified, which means that they meet the extremely high standards for quality, trust, and transparency throughout its growing and processing.
Have the products been thoroughly tested?
To make sure you’re getting the best CBD for your money, you’ll want to look for batch reports or certificates of analysis (COA) from the manufacturer of the CBD product. These documents detail important information about things like the quantity of specific cannabinoids and the levels of heavy metals, pesticides, solvents, and THC found in an individual batch of products. Learn how to read a COA here.
Charlotte’s Web is committed to making every single product the best possible extraction from the goodness of Mother Nature, and we do so by overseeing the entire production process. This starts by testing soils, hand tending to keep weeds at bay, and testing the plants as they grow to ensure correct phytochemical profile, testing the final product, and more testing in between. Hemp Extract vs Hemp Seed Extract
Additionally, while wading through the vast array of hemp-based options on the shelves, remember that you want hemp extract with CBD and other phytocannabinoids, not hemp seed extract. CBD and other phytocannabinoids are found in the aerial parts of the plant, not the seeds. Oils made from hemp seeds carry their own beneficial properties, but they are not going to deliver the internal wellness benefits you may be looking for.

What type of CBD is it?
Finally, more than just CBD matters. Since CBD is the big buzzword in the health and wellness space currently, you’ll see those three letters on many products. Before investing in one, know the differences between CBD-only extracts and a whole-plant hemp extract with CBD like Charlotte’s Web. While CBD can support many healthy processes within the body, pairing cannabidiol with its fellow phytocannabinoids — all naturally occurring in hemp — can support the body even further. More here. All of our products (except our specially crafted CBD Isolate) include a full range of phytocompounds, which makes Charlotte’s Web more than just CBD.
Let’s go over the differences.
Types of CBD
Pure CBD or CBD Isolate: Pure CBD products isolate the CBD (cannabinol) found within hemp extract to ensure no other cannabinoids, including THC, are included. These products allow you to personalize the level of CBD in your daily routine to support overall wellness without any of the other cannabinoids found in hemp. Check out our blog post on if CBD can show up on a drug test for more information on why some people prefer a CBD Isolate.
Full-Spectrum CBD: While CBD can assist in many healthy processes within the body, pairing cannabidiol with its fellow phytocannabinoids —all naturally occurring in hemp — can support the body even further. Full-spectrum CBD utilizes every cannabinoid found in the hemp plant to deliver the most benefits possible by taking advantage of what’s called the “Entourage Effect.”
