Cannabis growing reddit

I live in Chicago, I own a couple head shops, (I had a few for over 8 years) , and I’m currently growing cannabis. I’m a newer grower, and I was very uninformed before I started. I thought producing dispensary quality bud took a greenhouse and $1000’s of dollars of equipment, plus a degree in horticulture.

Now, all those things help for sure, but it’s more relevant for larger scale operations. Growing the legal limit of 5 plants in your home will take up less than 4×4 feet of space, and could yield 8-16 oz every 3 months, with very, and I stress VERY basic knowledge.

Remember this, 80% of what you get in the end is genetics. The majority of your yield is directly correlated to the amount of soil you use. Of course there’s diminishing returns. For autoflowering cannabis 5 gallons is usually plenty.

What is autoflowering cannabis? Perfect for new growers!

“Auto’s” are cannabis seeds that do not require a “flip” or change in light cycle to begin flowering. They also tend to grow shorter, and mature much faster. Typical flowering period for an auto is 30-45 days with 20-30 day vegetation period. Some run a little longer but usually 90-100 days max from seed to harvest.

Why is this good? Well for one you just keep them in 18 hour light. From sprout to harvest. No worries about light leaks, or the plants getting to large to control.

You also need to worry much less about adding nutrients. Most autos finish fast enough that with good soil they can make it through their entire life cycle. With regular “photo period” cannabis, harvest can take upward of 4 months. The plant depletes all the nutrients in the soil and new ones must be added. This is where the majority of mistakes are made. Too much, too little, not often enough, not the right kind etc. With autos at most you may need one bottle of bloom nutrients. Again though, with the right soil, all you need is water and a ph tester.

What do I actually need to grow 5 plants.

A 4×4 tent (which will include humidity and temp sensors usually)

A light (many options, you can get decent LED quantom board from china if you want to get the best for your money or you can look into companies like mars hydro for budget options. )

A ph tester kit

possibly a humidifier/dehumidifier depending on conditions i your grow area.

if smell is an issue an exhaust fan and a filter.

Set up is no harder than ikea. The tents build very easy, hang your light, clip your fan or set it on the ground. Etc.

If anyone has any other questions id be glad to help.
